Build Your Home Studio on a Budget

You wish to record music at home, yet you find yourself looking at pages of equipment, complicated specifications, and prices that exceed your rent payment. This is the unspoken truth for novices when it comes to producing high-quality sound: you don’t need a lot of expensive equipment in order to produce great audio quality. You simply require the correct equipment and in the proper order, while being mindful of your financial situation.

This article is short and to the point. Just the basics you need to start making music and recordings at home right away, with no extra content or extras.

The Three Essentials to Start Your Home Studio

No matter how much they cost, every home studio needs three basic pieces of equipment. Keep this in mind before you look at different types of equipment and their prices. Without these, your recordings will not sound as good.

    1. The audio interface is the brain of the whole system. This device changes the microphone's analogue signals into a digital format that computers can read. If you don't have an audio interface, your recordings will be low-quality, amateurish, and noisy.

    2. Microphone: This is your voice or instrument. You can't make good recordings without this tool.

    3. Studio headphones don't use your favourite gaming or Bluetooth headphones. Closed-back studio headphones let you listen to your recordings in real time without letting the sound into the microphone.

That's about it. Just get these three devices, your computer, and a free DAW, and you're good to go!

    Budget Setup under ₹15,000

Believe it or not, it is entirely possible to assemble a decent setup for ₹15,000 or less.

Audio Interface — Focusrite Scarlett Solo (Generation 3)

    Price Range: ₹8,500-9,500

There are many reasons why this product is the best choice for beginners. First of all, it records sound at 24 bits and 192 kHz, has a sturdy design, and comes with a lot of free plugins and a DAW. It will work just fine for recording one sound, like from one microphone or one guitar. You only need to plug it in with a USB.

Why it's good: easy-to-use preamps, no latency when monitoring, works with both Windows and Mac, and professionals all over the world use it.

Do you have an even tighter budget? The Behringer UMC22 (₹4,000–₹5,000) is a good choice for beginners. It's not as nice as the Scarlett, but it's good enough for beginners who are just starting out.

    Condenser Microphone — Audio-Technica AT2020 (XLR Condenser)

    Cost: Approximately ₹6,500 – ₹7,500

The Audio Technica AT2020 is one of the least expensive microphones you can buy for a home recording studio. This is because it is a great mic with a large diaphragm condenser that can record a wide range of sounds. This is the mic that most amateur audio producers use in their home studios.

Pros: Warm and accurate sound, cardioid pattern to block out side noises, works well with the Focusrite Scarlett when used with an XLR interface, and doesn't make a lot of noise on its own.

The MAONO AU-A04 XLR Condenser Microphone Set (₹2,500–₹3,500) comes with a boom stand and a pop filter.

    Studio Headphones — Sony MDR-7506

    Price Range: ₹6,500 - ₹8,000

Sony MDR-7506 has been the go-to choice for closed back studio headphones for more than three decades now. They’re present in every recording studio, simply because of their ability to offer an accurate frequency response. Listen to what you are mixing and don’t get any false impressions of the music.

What makes it stand out: Excellent sound quality, comfortable for hours, foldable design, and durable build.

Bonus Tip: Replace the AT2020 with the MAONO AU-A04 (₹3,000) to stay within ₹14,000 budget.

Have Some Room for Improvement? Invest in Studio Monitors

If you’ve grown accustomed to how things operate and wish to step up your game, studio monitors would be the logical upgrade for you. Listening to mixes via headphones can only take you so far because studio monitors help you establish an open environment for your mixes.

PreSonus Eris E3.5 Studio Monitors (Pair)
    Price: around ₹8,000 to ₹10,000

The PreSonus Eris E3.5 make for an excellent starter pair of studio monitors in India currently. They offer a balanced and neutral sound for mixing purposes. Their size (3.5 inches) is suitable for small home setups and placement on desks. They also feature a front-mounted volume control and TRS as well as RCA input ports, allowing for direct connection to a Focusrite Scarlett interface without the use of additional cables.

Key features: Precise sound staging, bass clarity, front-facing bass port, and reliable brand with worldwide professional usage in studios.

Alternative: The M-Audio BX3 (roughly ₹7,000-₹8,000) is an excellent choice as a budget-friendly product that has better bass capabilities and will be very useful for creating hip-hop music.

    And Finally

Hardware is just one piece of the puzzle; another is your recording environment and the production skills behind your music. Even a ₹15,000 system in a domestic setting can sound fantastic, but it’s useful to work with people who have a good understanding of how to extract all possible potential from each song.
